“Unlikely Angel” Review

Unlikely Angel: Directed by Michael Switzer. With Dolly Parton, Roddy McDowall, Brian Kerwin, Allison Mack. Dolly Parton portrays a country-music performer who meets an untimely demise, but cannot enter heaven until she performs a good deed back on Earth: to reunite a workaholic widower with his children for Christmas.

Allison Mack! So young, but still so familiar to me as a fan of Smallville, it was super weird to see her as a kid when I know what her future holds for her both as an actress and as a convicted conwoman and religious nutjob. Whew!

That shock aside, this is an extremely heartwarming, extremely uplifting, and extremely Christian moving about putting a family back together with the help of an Unlikely Angel, as played by Dolly. She’s playing a character that was sleeping around, drinking, doing whatever she wanted, and was killed trying to avoid hitting a deer in the middle of the road. She gets to heaven and is given a second chance to avoid burning for all of eternity in the pits of Hell by a humorous arch angel that gives her a mission to save a family from themselves. It’s a pretty weird story if you look at it took closely, but it’s Dolly so I choose not to.

Here’s the title song:

Finding that link was pretty easy, but it reminded me that I wanted to watch this “Made for TV” movie on Amazon Prime and I had to type in the entire title in to find her version, as there’s another more modern version that looks like it was “made for streaming”. Then when I finally got it started, it was a 480p stream with audio that sounded like it was recorded off a VCR that had seen better days. It wasn’t a great experience, but again, it’s Dolly so I choose not to care.
