Fantasy Island: Directed by Jeff Wadlow. With Michael Peña, Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell. When the owner and operator of a luxurious island invites a collection of guests to live out their most elaborate fantasies in relative seclusion, chaos quickly descends.
“Monkey Paw” the television series is turned into “Monkey Paw” the horror film by Blumhouse, a production company that has had a couple stinkers, but most of their output has been on the better side, which I’m going to include “Fantasy Island” on the better side list. I’ve heard a fair bit of reviewers dragging on the film, but 2/3 of the film is fantastic and well done. The last third when they try to explain, then re-explain, then re-re-explain who’s doing what to who, and why it’s being done, that’s the stuff that should have been simplified to have just one twisty reveal instead of the 3 or 4 that we ended up with.
It’s still good enough to recommend if you’re in the mood for some psychological horror with hilarious call backs to the original television series.
