I watched both version of “Overboard”, neither were great movies, though the original cast of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel seemed to have better chemistry. In fact, the two people in the remake had no chemistry at all, so there’s really no comparison there. There’s a not so clever gender swap between the version, and the new one heavily invests in the Spanish language, perhaps, as was suggested by my wife, because the Spanish speaking audiences wouldn’t be as familiar with the original movie. The original also had a much more believable premise, as he was a handy man working for himself, had built a cabinet and was being bilked by a “rich bitch”, where as the new one, the commoner was working for a carpet cleaning service that ultimately would have paid her for her time spent and she really should not have been pursuing immediate payment. This is a comedy, so I get that they’re playing fast and loose with social norms, but it was still shocking to see both version featuring the amnesiac patient being raped by their kidnappers. Even the 2018 version of this movie had the scene!
Easily skippable, and while it was a fun ride, there’s some problematic elements to it for anyone that spends more than a few minutes thinking about the moral implications of what was going on in the film.
