“Sinners” Review

Sinners: Directed by Ryan Coogler. With Miles Caton, Saul Williams, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Jack O’Connell. Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

I finally got around to watching this in an AMC, but sadly missed the Dolby Digital release. I actually tried to see it a few weeks ago, but it had already shifted from the DD theater to the 10 seater and I gave up on seeing it in a theater, but it’s been doing so well they moved it back into one of the larger theaters, yay!

Sinners is a great movie and I spent the entire time wondering who was playing opposite of Michael B Jordan, but spoilers, it’s Michael B Jordan playing both brothers. I didn’t pick up on it at all, which maybe says more about my progressive face blindness than anything else, but I was amazed at how well it was done by both the actor and the crew that made it happen.

It’s amazing how well Coogler was able to toe the line of every goofy stereotype of vampire films, period films, musicals, and family reunions and not mess up even a single one of them. There’s a musical piece in the second act (right when the young musician is playing his song) that could have been a horrible misfire, with twerking, DJs, and tribal dancers, but it was impossibly done in a way that sold the story that I think they were going for.

This was a 5 star movie that did nearly everything right (there’s one scene at the end that I though was goofy in a bad way) and should be scene in theaters if possible.
