“The Monster Squad” Review

The Monster Squad: Directed by Fred Dekker. With Andre Gower, Robby Kiger, Stephen Macht, Duncan Regehr. A young group of monster fanatics attempt to save their hometown from Count Dracula and his monsters.

I found this on a list of movie “that couldn’t be made today”, then I read the description, and thought to myself “how could this be on this list?”. I think it’s primarily because of the homophobic language, the smoking kids, the pedophilia, the gratuitous use of the word “shit” by every kid in the movie or maybe even the recurring peeping tom sub plot. The story is pretty interesting if slightly unbelievable that a group of young boys would be really into Dracula or Frankenstein, the acting is way way over the top.

One fun scene was where a kid and his dad were talking about a new horror film named “Groundhog Day 12” which has nothing to do with the Bill Murray film that isn’t due to be released for another 6 years after this one. Another fun note is the large amount of Marvel comic stuff that’s just sitting around in the background of nearly ever kid’s room.

The last fun part? Dracula using dynamite instead of the powers that he traditionally has.
